Top-quality lamination increases the value of printed products. As the most durable of paper coatings, film lamination offers a protective shield to safeguard against normal wear and tear as well as grease and water. It’s the ideal coating for frequently handled products that must endure heavy use and still remain on the shelf. Laminating can also add visual appeal to your products: a laminate that properly refracts light can make colors jump off the page, while glare-reducing laminates can improve readability.
Here is an overview of the different laminating options available at Nationwide Laminating and Finishing.
- Nylon-based laminate - This laminate is excellent for book covers, as it lays flat and resists curling. Nylon is available in gloss and matte.
- Clear polyester - The least expensive finish to use, this is a standard in the industry. This laminate produces a glossy effect and is great for bringing out the color and shine of printed materials. Like satin and matte, this laminate offers good protection from scuffing and scratching. A disadvantage is that the high-gloss can prevent readability in brightly lit areas.
- Satin polyester - Produces a medium-gloss finish that retains excellent color consistency. A drawback of this laminate type: the clear, glossy finish can cause a reflective glare.
- Matte polyester - This film provides a less glossy finish that allows the product to be viewed from any angle. Problems with reflective glare are minimized with this finish, making it ideal for trade show or presentation products that are presented under fluorescent lighting.
- Polypropylene - Though this laminate provides high-gloss at less cost, it's also prone to scratching. Because of this laminate's lack of rigidity, it usually isn't recommended for double sided lamination.

Considerations for Laminating Digitally-Printed Books If you’re working with digital printed or toner-based inks on a sheet, let us know up front so we can have the correct type of film that they require. High-tack or Corona treated lamination adheres best on these sheets.
